- WebUpload v3
- ============
-
- WebUpload is a program for uploading and downloading web sites. Its
- purpose is to help maintain an "online" website by keeping it up to
- date with the copy on your hard disc. It does so via the standard
- FTP protocol.
-
- v3 of WebUpload adds much finer control over what is going to be
- uploaded or downloaded, making the program far more flexible.
-
-
- Adding a site to WebUpload
- --------------------------
-
- The first thing you need to do with WebUpload is click on the Add button
- in the main window to add a new site to its list. This allows you to enter
- details about the site:
-
- Site name: This is used for display purposes only, and should be
- the name by which you wish the website to be known on
- menus etc.
-
- Local directory: Drag the directory containing your hard disc copy
- of the site to this field.
-
- FTP address: This is the FTP server to which the pages will be uploaded
- for example homepages.demon.co.uk
-
- Remote directory: In most cases leave this blank to upload to wherever
- the web server starts you at when you log in (usually
- correct). If you specifically *need* to change the
- directory, then enter the information here.
-
- User name: You will need a user name and password (often your internet
- account user name and password) to log in to upload files.
-
- Password: (see User name)
-
- In addition, there are two extra options if you expand the window for
- Account and Port. Only alter these if you *know* you need to do so,
- as they are rarely required, and you would be told if necessary.
-
-
- Scanning the site
- -----------------
-
- Once you have added a site, it will be scanned for files, and a tree view
- window will open listing the files present. Should you need to re-scan
- a site for files, click on the Dcan local site for new files button on
- the main window.
-
- In addition, you will be asked whether you wish to check for changes when
- you select the site from the menu in future.
-
-
- The tree view window
- --------------------
-
- This window is designed to show you which files will be used in the
- upload process. You can select files by clicking on them, and mark
- them to be ignored, already uploaded etc. You can Stamp a file with
- the current date and time if you wish to force that file to be
- uploaded (ie. forcibly mark it as changed).
-
- The toolbar on the side of the window allows the site to be rescanned,
- and you can view the current file by clicking Preview, which can be
- helpful when checking to see if you want to upload a particular file.
-
-
- Selecting which files are uploaded
- ----------------------------------
-
- In addition to the "manual" options mentioned above in the tree
- view window, the main window allows you to select whether all
- the files in the site should be uploaded/downloaded (Everything)
- or just files changed since a given date. Dates of previous
- uploads/downloads can be selected by pressing menu over this
- field.
-
-
- Selecting whether to upload or download
- ---------------------------------------
-
- The Direction part of the main window allows you to select whether
- you wish to upload or download files.
-
-
-
- OPTIONS
- =======
-
- If you press menu over the iconbar icon, you will see an options
- menu with two options:
-
- Use PASV transfers
-
- The standard FTP protocol requires the remote machine to
- connect back to you to provide information. If you are
- using a firewall or other protection, then this isn't
- practical. PASV transfers get round this problem.
-
- In general we have found PASV transfers to be more reliable
- than normal transfers, as the onus is on your machine more
- than the remote machine. As a result, we would suggest
- most people will want to run in PASV mode.
-
- Rescan box on site select
-
- When you select a site from the pop-up menu on the main
- window, WebUpload will ask you if you wish to check it
- for new/changed files. Power-users may get irritated
- with this window appearing each time, so you can disable
- via this choices menu. Rescans are available via buttons
- elsewhere in the program, so this isn't a problem.
